Coffee Hour at the App Center

The Appalachian Center will host a series of weekly drop-in Coffee Hours Thursdays, 10-11 am through the end of the semester. The Center invites students, faculty, staff, and community members for coffee and light refreshments. Come visit with others interested in the region and learn more about the work of the Appalachian Center and the Appalachian Studies Program. The Center invites ideas for programs, initiatives, and events. Coffee Hour is a space to exchange ideas, discuss regional issues and events, and share research in a casual, collegial atmosphere.

Talk by Crystal Wilkinson

Please, join the UK Appalachian Center and the African American and Africana Studies Program in welcoming beloved author Crystal Wilkinson to Campus for a talk on Tuesday, April 5th. Ms. Wilkinson is the current Writer in Residence at Berea College and will present in the UKAA Auditorium in the W. T. Young Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Her talk is titled Black Women and Mental Health in Appalachia. She will also read from her latest  novel, The Birds of Opulence and hold a discussion with audience members. This event is free, and all UK Students, Faculty, and Staff are most welcome to attend! "Been to the Mountain: Appalachian Origins of the Civil Rights Movement", an Appalachian Forum

The UK Appalachian Center is happy to welcome Dr.Bill Turner for an Appalachian Forum as part of our speaker series on Civil Rights, Labor and Environmental Social Movements in Appalachia.  Dr. Turner's talk is entitled: Been to the Mountain: Origins of the Civil Rights Movement and will be held in the Whitehall Classroom Building, Room 110 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015.  This is a free event, and all are welcome to meet with our guest from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the UK Appalachian Center after the talk.

Benham Coal Museum Tour

UK Students, Staff, and Faculty are welcome to join the UK Appalachian Center for a trip to tour the Benham Coal Museum in Benham, KY on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  The group will meet at the UK Appalachian Center (624 Maxwelton Court) to leave by bus at 8 a.m. and return to Lexington by about 8 p.m.  This tour is an opportunity to learn about the history of coal mining in eastern, KY through exhibits on company towns, viewing a mine portal, and hearing from scholars including Dr. Bill Turner on life in Benham and Lynch, KY throughout time.  This is a free event, and we will accommodate as many as we can!  Please RSVP by email to erin.norton@uky.edu to reserve a space on the bus by Thursday, April 16, 2015. SWAP Meeting, "Dammed Memories: Narratives of Belonging among Tehri Dam-Displaced People in Uttarakhand, India"

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to welcome Saakshi Joshi, a Visiting Fulbright Scholar.  Ms. Joshi is giving a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Talk from 12 - 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 here at the Center.  This talk is free and open to Students, Faculty, and Staff to attend.  Her talk is entitled, Dammed Memories: Narratives of Belonging among Tehri Dam-displaced People in Uttarakhand, India.

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to welcome Crystal Wilkinson for a mini-residency that will include an Appalachian Forum entitled: Birds of Opulence: Black Women, Madness, and Resilience in Appalachia.  This event is free, open to the public, and will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the UK Law School's Auditorium (please, enter through the Memorial Hall side entrance of the building).  Ms. Wilkinson will give a public reading and hold a discussion with attendees.  There is a public reception at the UK Appalachian Center, 624 Maxwelton Court from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. before the reading and discussion.

SWAP Meeting with Brown Award Recipients

The UK Appalachian Center is hosting a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Meeting from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015.  Two of five 2014 Brown Award recipients, Lindsay Shade and Kathryn Engle will be presenting on their research.  Each presenter has research interests in Appalachia and is a graduate students at the University of Kentucky.

WE WILL RESCHEDULE AND POST UPDATES WHEN PLANS ARE FINALIZED*** The University of Kentucky Graduate Appalachian Research Community presents the 6th Annual UK Appalachian Research Community Symposium and Arts Showcase on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the William T. Young Library.  This year's keynote speaker is Lisa Conley, Ph.D. Her research interests focus on foodways, environmental sustainability, and local food politics in motivating the self-provisioning practices of people in rural and urban Kentucky.  Please, find more information about registration or proposal submition here: https://appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu/annual-research-symposium.  The deadline to submit abstracts is February 15, 2015.  Registration for presenters and non-presenters is free.  Undergraduate and Graduate students are welcome to register.
