By Jenny Wells-Hosley

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 16, 2021) — The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center, Appalachian Studies program and the UK Appalachian Research Community (formerly the UK Graduate Appalachian Research Community, or GARC) are inviting students to submit proposals for the upcoming UK Appalachian Research Symposium and Arts Showcase.

The symposium is open to all undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines from all colleges and universities doing work pertaining to Appalachia. Students without previous presentation experience, undergraduate students, students seeking feedback on ongoing research and students creating performance or visual artworks related to Appalachia are strongly encouraged to participate.

“For the first time since 2019, UK's annual symposium for Appalachian research will resume in hybrid format on March 5, 2022,” said Edward Lo, a Ph.D. candidate in the UK Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and teaching assistant in Appalachian Studies. “Registration is free, so please consider attending or presenting your work! We welcome any work related to Eastern Kentucky and greater Appalachia.”

The deadline to submit a proposal is 5 p.m. EST Feb. 11, 2022.

More information on the symposium and submitting proposals is available here.

The 2022 symposium is intended to foster a supportive community of emerging scholars. This event will provide an opportunity for students to network, collaborate, learn from each other’s findings and explore issues relevant to Appalachian communities.

Registration is free for both presenters and registered attendees.

The University of Kentucky is increasingly the first choice for students, faculty and staff to pursue their passions and their professional goals. In the last two years, Forbes has named UK among the best employers for diversity, and INSIGHT into Diversity recognized us as a Diversity Champion four years running. UK is ranked among the top 30 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK has been judged a “Great College to Work for" three years in a row, and UK is among only 22 universities in the country on Forbes' list of "America's Best Employers."  We are ranked among the top 10 percent of public institutions for research expenditures — a tangible symbol of our breadth and depth as a university focused on discovery that changes lives and communities. And our patients know and appreciate the fact that UK HealthCare has been named the state’s top hospital for five straight years. Accolades and honors are great. But they are more important for what they represent: the idea that creating a community of belonging and commitment to excellence is how we honor our mission to be not simply the University of Kentucky, but the University for Kentucky.
