Chemistry Poster Competition 2014

On Friday April 18 the Chemistry Department at the University of Kentucky hosted the annual Regional Undergraduate Research in Chemistry Poster Competition. This event, organized by Prof. Edith Glazer, was sponsored by the UK Department of Chemistry and the regional chapter of the American Chemical Society.



Twenty one students participated, presenting diverse research ranging from the effects of specific protein in heart failure to new synthetic approaches to nanowires for applications in waveguides.



The top prizes were given to:



Senior Michael Ware (1st place, poster title: SURFACE PASSIVATION OF GRAPHENE QUANTUM DOTS SYNTHESIZED FROM CARBON NANO-ONIONS”)



Junior Michael Crocker (2nd place, poster title: “OXIDATIVE DECONSTRUCTION OF SWITCH GRASS LIGNIN”)



Three honorable mentions:



Sophomore Erica Darnell (poster title: “USING PERMANGANATE AS A COLORIMETRIC PROBE TO UNDERSTAND RUTHENIUM DNA INTERACTIONS”)



Senior Brian Ingoglia (poster title: “SYNTHESIS OF PHOTOCLEAVABLE MOLECULES FOR SURFACE MODIFICATION”)



Senior Luke Williams (poster title: “CELLULAR MODEL OF BRAIN DAMAGE CAUSED BY LONG-TERM ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE”)
