LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2024) — The University of Kentucky International Center, UK College of Arts and Sciences, UK College of Fine Arts and UK Residence Life will hold a two-day celebration of UK’s international community on Sept. 26-27.

“Global UK: A Celebration of Our Campus Mosaic” will feature a student panel and special film screening and will culminate in an international festival at Alumni Commons.

“This event will be a fantastic celebration of our incredible international community here at UK,” said Francis Musoni, associate professor of history and director of international studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. “There are more than 100 countries represented across this campus by faculty, staff and students. Global UK will be a way to connect and celebrate all of the countries and cultures represented across our truly global campus.”

The two-day celebration will begin with a student panel on “Bridging Cultures across Borders” from 3-5 p.m. Sept. 26. Day two of the event will feature a screening of the film "Goong: Sound through Fire," followed by a conversation with the director of the film, Maria Mendonça from 3-5 p.m. The international festival at Alumni Commons will follow from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 27.

“We are an international campus,” said Karen Slaymaker, associate director of International Student and Scholar Services. “We’re excited to come together to celebrate that.”

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
