Appalachian Studies Association Conference Plenary II, Black Appalachian Women: Testimonies, Environmental Justice, and Historical Reparations

Friday, March 13, 2020, 5:00pm-6:15pm in the Gatton Student Center Worsham Cinema. A panel of Black Appalachian women discuss their work in the academy, film, social justice organizations, literature, and museums.

Panelists include: Karida Brown, UCLA Associate Professor of Sociology; Kelly Navies, Museum Specialist Oral Historian at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, Co-Executive Director, Highlander Research & Education Center; and Crystal Wilkinson, UK Associate Professor of English; moderated by Jillean McCommons, UK Department of History PhD Candidate

Appalachian Studies Association Conference Plenary 1, Mixed Mesophytic Nation: Pathways to Citizenship

 

Friday, March 13, 2020, 11:30am-12:45pm in the Gatton Student Center Worsham Cinema. The session focuses on forest commoning in four historically and politically distinct situations: Appalachian settler commoning in relation to public lands, Appalachian settler commoning in the coalfields, Afrolachian commoning in the coalfields, and Cherokee participation in management of public forests. The panel makes connections between associated spiritual and cultural values and political implications for stewarding the Mother Forest.

Panelists include: Ruby Daniels, Incubator Farmer, Sprouting Farms; Tommy Cabe, Forest Resource Specialist, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; & Mary Hufford, Associate Director, Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network, moderated by Kathryn Newfont, UK Associate Professor of History

Conversations with Gurney featuring Crystal Wilkinson

Join us for our second Conversations with Gurney event of the semester featuring University of Kentucky associate professor and award winning writer, Crystal Wilkinson, on Monday, November 11th at 5PM in the CM Gatton College of Business Woodward Hall Room 307. Reception to follow at the UK Appalachian Center 624 Maxwelton Ct.

Roger May "Looking at Appalachia: Complicating the Narrative"

Roger May presented his guest lecture, "Looking at Appalachia: Complicating the Narrative" in UK Lewis Honors College class HON 251: Material Culture and Appalachia located in Lewis Hall Room 135 from 1-2PM. Followed by another presentation "How to Get Home Again" in the Niles Gallery of the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library. We thoroughly enjoyed Roger's visit and look forward to collaborating in the future!

Roger May "How to Get Home Again"

After his presentation in the Lewis Honors College, Roger May presented, "How to Get Home Again" on Friday, November 9, 2018 from 3-4PM in the Niles Gallery located in the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library. A reception at the UK Appalachian Center followed this event which included a catered meal from Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe for UK faculty, staff and students.

Conversations with Gurney

Our inaugural "Conversations with Gurney" event was held at the Lucille Caudill Little Library in the John Jacobs Niles Gallery (160 Patterson Drive) on November 14th from 2-4PM. Gurney Norman, scholar-in-residence for the Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program, hosted Anne Shelby, native Kentuckian, storyteller, poet, and award-winning author. After the performance, a reception was held at the Appalachian Center, 624 Maxwelton Court. Soup beans, Ale 8 and a great time was enjoyed by all!
