Nally Wins National New Advisor Award

By Gail Hairston

For the second year in a row, an advisor in the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center has been recognized by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

“Phyllis Nally has done sterling work and deserves this honor,” said Ruth Beattie, associate dean for advising for the college in the Office of Academic Advising and a biology professor in the Health, Society and Populations Program.

Phyllis Nally was named the winner of the 2017 Excellence in Advising-New Advisor Award in Region 3, an area that includes Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. The New Advisor Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as an advisor for a period of three years or less.

Nally is a graduate of Berea College and earned her master’s degree in community counseling at Eastern Kentucky University. Her most favorite thing is “to be around genuinely kind people who are interested in making this world a much better place.”

Established in 1983, the NACADA Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising honors individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. NACADA is a representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.

NACADA publishes a scholarly journal, a quarterly e-publication, and occasional special publications. NACADA offers an advising training video, manages an Academic Advising Consultants and Speakers Service, offers member career services and an internship connection service, funds research grants, sponsors an awards program, grants scholarships, and supports commissions to address important academic advising issues. NACADA provides a network and professional identity for the thousands of faculty, full-time advisors, and administrators whose responsibilities include academic advising.
