MALDI

The choice of ionization method depends on the properties of the sample.

Small Molecules

Small molecules may be suitable for MALDI if they are readily ionizable. In positive ion mode, singly-charged ions produced by addition of H+ or Na+ are most common.

Polymers

Organonometallics/Polyconjugated Aromatics

MALDI also works well for highly conjugated aromatic systems and some organometallic compounds. Ions may be produced by proton attachment or photoionization.
