Umdabu South African Dance Company

Memorial Hall on the University of Kentucky campus was nearly at capacity with students, parents, kids, and community members as Umdabu South African Dance Company gave an electrifying performance on February 28, 2011. Jomo Xulu, the director of the group, spoke to Lauren Kientz's class (South Africa & Kentucky: Different Lands, Common Ground) before the performance, and the troupe also did a teaser show at the Student Center in the afternoon. Included in the performance were Zulu dances, and a step dance done by mine workers using their boots as their percussion instruments. The evening concluded with the troupe instructing the audience through a few dances, and everyone getting up and trying them out. Photos by Richie Wireman
